Mixed Media: Drawing, Painting, Clay Sculpture
Classes are on a first-come-basis
Enrollment: Small private art classes are offered W and Th from 3:00 – 4:30 year round. Sessions run for eight weeks. The finest art materials and low student teacher ratio ensures a rewarding art experience. Classes are designed for motivated students who are interested in exploring their person and academic interests using mixed media as well as clay sculpture. Prices are $14 per hour which includes kiln firing and materials.
SCULPTURE: Working with clay, students learn
the basics of hand building: slab, pinch, coil and sculpture. Utilizing surface texture and color, students learn sound construction methods necessary for kiln firing. Projects include, mask-making, bas relief, ocarina whistles, and more.
DRAWING and PAINTING: Students use a variety of materials including: pastels, color pencils, watercolors, charcoal, as well as temper and printmaking. Students learn about composition, form and light. The primary goal and focus is for each student to develop their own personal imagery and confidence in self expression. Artistic appreciation and skills are taught through a combination of targeted lessons, combined with each student’s rich imagination and experiences.
ABOUT THE TEACHER:Claudia Stevens (MA)
is a practicing artist who has taught art to children since 1990 and adults since 2013. Claudia illustrates for Sunset Magazine, Bantam Books, Harcourt and Brace Co., Rodale Press and other publishers. She teaches residencies in the public schools throughout the year through the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County. She has been teaching art at the Spring Hill since 1996.
